This paper analyzes the prosperity and decline of the art of illustration, studying the reason and the result of the evolution in a chronological order of 30 years since China implements reform and opening to the outside world. By analyzing the changes of illustration in different periods, based on the fundamental shift in social patterns, and the influence from multiple factors such as the economic policy's adjustment and deepen, we can conclude that the evolution of illustration reflects the public aesthetic taste in different times, which is also a mirror reflecting social changes.There are three main causes which lead to the decline of traditional illustration art and the prosperity of modern illustration art. First, the client of illustration art changed. The majority group who enjoy illustration has changed. Second, the public aesthetic idea and taste transformed with the times. Third, the aesthetic psychological needs for public to keep pace with fashion.During the process of the illustration rise and fall, we see different artistic characteristics form the illustration works (created by using various medium) in different times, which have their own advantages and disadvantages. The modern art of illustration paid more attention on the public and the diversity of public aesthetic, greatly broadened the meaning of illustration with the help of science and technology. It succeed in both artistic, commercial, entertainment and recreational. Compare with the international level of illustration, from technical to creative, illustration art in China still has a long way to go. Fortunately, the first step in this area showed a successful beginning, and it's reasonable to believe that the art of illustration will develop rapidly in future.
