Olivier Messiaen, a famous composer, theorist, organist and music educator in French, was one of the representatives of modern music. Eight pieces of Prelude, composed in 1929 for piano, was one typical work of his early piano compositions and one of the basal opuses to his experiment on different kinds of composition techniques. Starting with the theory of harmony, this paper, which based on the analyze of pitch and material for the opus, studied from several aspects on modes of limited transposition, chord of added notes, parallel harmony, tonality and representation of structure strength and so on. And then, this paper analyzed and classified all kinds of harmonic techniques, and also summarized their application, used forms and manifestation. In the end, by instructing and explaining the confirmed ways of tonality and structure strength in the opus, the experimental and fundamental function of Prelude to his compositions of piano will be embodied in this paper. Therefore, to hold better understanding on the musical style of this work and musical characteristics different from French impressionism music in his early works, this paper will offer help for the further study of Messiaen's music by in formations and ways.
