College education of art design in China is developing fast despite the situation of monotony of teaching models. Based on development of the art design education, this thesis carries out an integrated analysis of evolvement of the art design teaching methods. With field investigation in sociology being the theoretical foundation, the author with her research experience in this area explains the application of observing method and interviewing method in the art design education and discusses how to apply various methods of field investigation to the art design education. In addition, the author claims the combination of classroom teaching and field investigation to be the trend in the art design education and justifies the importance and feasibility of the latter in a systemic way. Furthermore, by analyzing teaching characteristics and laws of the field investigation the author concludes that it should be set as a subject at the undergraduate stage. Hope to contribute for the construction of art design education.
