Criminal legal aid is a kind of legal service that aims to provide the Poor or the person in the criminal case with the way of releasing or reducing the legal cost. As a major insurance to remind social justice of protecting civil rights, criminal legal aid plays a very important role in a country's judicial system. However, due to the later development, there are many problems in the legislation and the practice. The purpose of this article is to illustrate the system of criminal legal aid, to display the problem it meets in accord with some practices in this field and to provide lessons for perfecting criminal legal aid system in future.The text consists of preface, text, and conclusion. The text is divided as four parts.The first part is basic theory about the connotation of criminal legal aid, including the concept of legal assistance and criminal legal aid, the development of criminal legal aid system both home and abroad, and the exploration of typical Chinese criminal legal aid mode. As a result, it analyses the Pudong mode example in Shanghai.The second part describes the present situation of Chinese criminal legal aid that results from conflicts between reality and development in practices of criminal legal aid. It specifically illustrates some real problems the Pudong government meets in this period.The third part presents two ways to perfect criminal legal aid. The first way is to promote the status of criminal legal aid system by legislation, the other is to provide more funds and strengthen administration for criminal legal aid by justice.The last part is some advices for local legal aid institution to function better. According to 15-year experiences in criminal legal aid, practicing efficiently and looking forward entirely are two ways to do better.
