In recent years, the perimeter countries of the South China Sea, such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia have been challenging China’s sovereignty in the South China Sea, leading to many disputes with China, which caused losses for both sides. The international community and the perimeter countries of the South China Sea queried the dashed line map, trying to deny the legitimacy of the dashed line map. For instance, the United States government claimed that sour marine claim about the South China Sea is not clear, the statement is not consistent, being not in conformity to the international law principles and lack of international law basis.Map plays an important role in the international border disputes or even a decisive role in some cases with irrefutable presumption of validity. In the face of such international situation, it is necessary to analyze the probative force of the dashed line map of the South China Sea.The thesis will first analyze the formation and evolution of dashed line map of the South China Sea, and then analyse the general principles of the map evidence effect and the probative force of map in international practices in terms of identifying the border. Finally, the author will analyze the probative force of the dashed line map of the South China Sea. This paper argues that the dashed line map of the South China Sea, together with the help of other evidences can reflect the national will, accuracy, professionalism of the production technology and be recognized by the neutrals. Viewing from the international principle of estoppel and the default of the state parties, the dashed line map of the South China Sea possesses the effectiveness of direct evidences with irrefutable presumption of validity and can be used as a decisive proof.
