American Information Hegemony In The Internet Age

After the Cold War, and with the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the United States of America has become the world’s only superpower, in order to better maintain its own interests, it began to seek the dominant position in the world. The continuous renovation of Internet information technology, especially the global expansion of the "digital space" which is based on the Internet has made the human society enter into information society from the original industrial society. For the forms of expression of American hegemony, it broke though the previous economic hegemony and political hegemony, and it had the new form of expression of "information hegemony".This paper discusses America’s information hegemony in the era of Internet in the following chapters. The introduction mainly states the background and research status of this topic. Chapter one introduces the concept of information hegemony, including the meaning, nature and characteristics. Chapter two expounds the formation of America’s information hegemony and its behavior. America’s information hegemony was formed by excellent training system for information talents and the advantages of network software and hardware. After the formation, America prides itself as the police of the cyber world and extends its tentacles to every corner of cyber space. Chapter three clarifies that traditional culture and interest are the main reason why America is pushing information hegemony. Traditional culture is the historical factor while interest is the real interest. Chapter four discusses problems caused by America’s pushing of information hegemony in political, economic and military fields. In political field, sovereignty and political safety of other countries are threatened. In economic field, many enterprises in other countries encounter obstacles while developing and intellectual property disputes occur constantly. In military field, the establishment of American cyber warfare command influences the world’s military security. The last chapter gives other countries some suggestions on dealing with America’s pushing of information hegemony. Every country should strengthen the communication and corporation with others on information network in the fields of politics, ethics and law. Moreover, as countries weak in information, developing countries need to strengthen itself in the construction of network infrastructure.In recent years, China and the United States of America have made considerable progress on the interaction and cooperation in the field of network information, even so, the friction between the two countries has never stopped, and the root cause of these frictions is America’s network information hegemony. In the paper, through the specific analysis on the formation, manifestation, reasons and the caused problems of America’s information hegemony, it explores its helpful revelation to us, and on this basis, it proposes some opinions and suggestions for curbing America’s network information hegemony.
