There are generally two ways of choosing American ambassadors, one of which is selecting “career diplomat”, the other is “political appointment”. The“political appointment” ambassadors are divided into three different specific types. The United States is the only superpower in the world, and its foreign policy contributes great influence to world politics. The ambassador appointment system of the United States is a part of its diplomacy system, so it contains some of the characteristics of the United States itself, and also reflects America’s foreign policy.To study America’s ambassador appointment system I selected five countries.They are the United Kingdom, Japan, Russia, South Korea and China, and the time of the study spans from the end of Cold War to 2014. Due to a longer time could be needed to analyze and discover the regular pattern, the time span of the study of some countries contains the period from the end of the WWII. Then the conclusion will be made from the study of the successive ambassadors of the United States.The first step of my study is to analyze the personnel career of the U.S.ambassador after the post Cold War. Second, through the statistics including the arrival and departure time and personal background, the ambassadors will be divided into three classifications. The third step is to analyze the relations between the Unites States and each country I mentioned above from the national level, and make an explanation. The fourth is to analyze the reason of the different ambassador selecting ways, and put forward the theoretical hypothesis. Fifth, analyze the advantages and effects of American diplomat appointment system from a systematic level.
