Abstract In the past fifty years China抯 economy has witnessed tremendous growth and the economic structure has undergone notable changes. However the process of urbanization lags far behind. The rate of industrialization reached 5 5.6% in 1998 while the rate of urbanization was only 33%. The gap between them is more than 20 percent. The situation in the western regions is far more serious. The slow process of urbanization gives rise to many problems in the western regions of China. Close attention should be paid to the issue of urbanization during the process of Development of Western China. The Development of Western China promotes the urbanization and urbanization, in turn, drives the development. Based upon this perception, this paper offers some advice on how to speed up the process of urbanization in China抯 western regions. This thesis is divided into four parts. Starting with the Development Poles Theory, Part one gives a brief account of Development Poles Theory and the issue of urbanization and puts I forward that we should attach importance to accelerating the process of urbanization in the Grand Development of the West. Part Two expounds on the history of development of cities in the western regions and the present situation there and analyses the causes for the sluggish urbanization process as well as it effect on the social and economic development . Part Three lists a selection of modes of urbanization for western cities and advocates that priority in development should be given to big cities and the emphasis should be put on the improvement of the quality of cities. Part Four offers several suggestions concerning the development of western cities, which cover the ecological environment, infrastructure , industrial structure, etc.
