In the past few years, state-owned foreign trade companies faced a more and more keen competition in the marketplace, which calls them an urgent strategic transition. This is the background of writing this thesis. In the first place, the author gives an analysis on state-owned companies' international and domestic trade environment, trade structure and trade principal undertakers; demonstrates the main menace that state-owned foreign trade companies faces and the main problems they inherently have. Then, the author puts forward an idea that strategic transition is an inevitable choice of state-owned foreign trade companies if they want to survive in the fierce competition. Based on these facts and the theory of international trade, trade innovation and company strategy, this thesis systematically studies and discusses the purpose, the principle, the method and the contents of strategic transition; and gives a complete model of strategic transition theory. This thesis also gives an elaborate description of supporting system including company management, system, organization structure and so on, which are vital for carrying out the strategic transition.According to the theory put forward above, the author gives concrete suggestions for such a transition that the companies need first to reconstruct their organization structure and operating process. The author points out that at the background of new economy, what is the evolving trend and direction of organization structure and its model. Then, the author discusses the system arrangement of state-owned foreign trade companies, and makes it clear that the companies must have a motivation and controlling mechanism in order to make them effective. With respect to the problem of company management, the thesis emphasizes the importance of concrete management, such as clients relationship management, risk management and knowledge management and so on. In order to prompt such transition, the author provides some policy suggestions to policy-makers of the government. Furthermore, the author provides a case as a sum-up, analyzing the strategic transition of China National Technology Import & Export Corporation, thus to demonstrate the importance and the practical value of strategic transition of state-owned foreign trade company.Finally, in retrospect of the whole thesis, the author points out some shortcomings of this work and indicates some further research issues.
