Market economic system has become the dominant system in our economic life after the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Thousands of new companies are born, while thousands of old ones are dying with each passing day. Large in number and full of vigor and vitality, small and medium-sized companies in China have played an important role in the national economy. Such being the case, how to maintain rapid development of those numerous small and medium-sized companies in China is an issue not only of great significance at the government level, but also at the corporate level.Focusing on this topic, the thesis analyzes carefully the operations of small and medium-sized companies in China, their problems, strengths and weaknesses, and puts forward some specific suggestions. The thesis is composed of seven parts. In the first two parts, the author discusses the competences and capabilities of small and medium-sized companies, their features, and their operations, and analyzes systematically the characteristics of the current market economy in China. In Part Three, the author discusses those factors affecting the competitive capabilities of small and medium-sized companies, while in Part Four, the author uses the SWOT matrix. The 5th part introduces two cases to illustrate the success and failure of small and medium-sized companies, and the 6th part addresses the major current problems facing small and medium-sized companies. In the last part, the author suggested five specific measures for small and medium-sized companies in maintain their sustained competitive advantages.
