Dairy plays an important role in the national economy. In recent years, the growth of raw milk production in China has been large, yet the production links are weak and effective consumption demand is not enough. The implementation of the State School Milk Program will facilitate the dairy development from all perspectives. Meanwhile, after China's WTO accession, more foreign enterprises will engage in the competition of the Chinese dairy market. This will unavoidably bring pressure to the Chinese dairy enterprises.Facing challenges from international dairy giants, the young Chinese dairy enterprises both have strengths and weaknesses. Strengths are reflected in the control over milk sources and marketing network, knowledge of the market environment and local consumers' regional preferences. In the meantime, there are noticeable differences: enterprises are of small scale and large number, and most of them have 3 lows in production, quality and efficiency.Chinese dairy enterprises must have a correct understanding of the weaknesses, and actively explore effective measures to improve competitiveness. They should continuously expand scale, consolidate strength, accord importance to quality control and marketing, cultivate and attract excellent staff, establish modern enterprise system, and strengthen strategic management of business. These measures will help to narrow the gap with foreign counterparts as quick as possible, and enterprises may calmly face challenges in the competitive market environment and become strong and powerful.
