Western Region Productivity Leaps And Bounds

The western region lags behind in development for a long time andthere exists an enormous disparity in the economic development of thewestern and eastern regions. At present, the western region is at a primarystage of industrialization and its industrializational rate is lower thanaverage national level by 5-6 percentage points. The GDP growth rate is1.4 percentage points lower than that of the eastern area on average overthe past 20 years of reform and opening-up. In 2001, the national percapita GDP is 7548 Yuan, the eastern area per capita GDP is 12811 Yuanand the western region per capita GDP is 5042 Yuan which is lower by33% than the average national level. Per capita GDP of Guizhou Provincein the western region is the lowest, with only 2859 Yuan, which is lowerby 4684 Yuan than the average national level. The density of railway inwestern region is only 54.3% of that of the eastern area. And thisdisparity has a general tendency to expand constantly. Under such abackground, to narrow the gap of development between the westernregion and the eastern region, realize the goal of revitalizing area -whilemaking people rich and guarantee the realization of the national goal ofbuilding a well- off society in an all-round way, the only way-out is tomake great efforts to realize the great-leap-forward development at agrowth rate higher than that of the eastern area. This is the background ofthis topic selected, and also the purpose and significance of this research. The most basic economics principle that productive force is the ultimate decisive force of social development tells us that the realization of great-leap-forward development in western region depends on realizing the great-leap-forward development of productive force of the western region, which is the essence and key content of the great-leap-forward development of the western region. This is the theme of the whole thesis.
