By reviewing the development of Chinese shipbuilding industry and looking into the future of the world shipbuilding industry, this thesis analyzes the advantages of Chinese shipbuilding industry and its rivals in the world, provides comparative analyses on their competitiveness at both state and enterprise level; measures the gap between them, outlines strategies to upgrade the competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding industry while presents suggestions on the measurements. The thesis is composed of eight chapters.Chapter 1 reviews the development of Chinese shipbuilding industry. China began building her first export-oriented ship in 1982. After twenty-year's development, the industry has reached the productivity of 10,000,000 dwt per year, with ships exported to 102 countries and regions including some developed ones, such as USA, UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Japan. Since 1995, China's annual shipbuilding output has occupied the world third for ten years, following only Korea and Japan.Chapter 2: states the situation of world shipbuilding industry and its future. A study on the world shipbuilding market tells that the "four-pole" framework — Japan, Korea, Western Europe and China — will continue for quite a long time.Chapter 3 introduces and analyzes the major rivals of Chinese shipbuilding industry in the world market, namely, Japan, Korea, and Western Europe.Chapter 4 puts emphases on the advantages of Chinese shipbuilding industry.Chapter 5 comparatively analyzes the international competitiveness of the world main shipbuilding powers, especially Japan, Korea, and some Western European countries, at state level, mainly on the following six aspects: a) the scale and capability of shipbuilding industry; b) shipbuilding technologies, c) productivity and efficiency, d) cost, e) supplement system; f) types, quality and delivery period of products.Chapter 6 uses analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to compare their international shipbuilding competitiveness of at enterprise level.Chapter 7 outlines the strategies to upgrade Chinese shipbuilding industry in the following respects: a) expanding shipbuilding scale; b) optimizing industrial layout; c) increasing the total volume; d) developing high-tech/high value-added ships; e) perfecting the supplement system; f) developing technologies.Chapter 8 suggests measurements to practice these strategies. This thesis features:1. A complete introduction to the situation and the future of Chinese and world shipbuilding market; and a full supported analysis which compares Chinese shipbuilding industry with those of Japan, Korea and Western Europe by using AHP, a systematical method combining qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis.2. On the basis of comparison, research and analysis, presenting the strategies to upgrade the competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding industry and the suggestions on measurements to practice them. Properly as the target set and operable the measurements are, these strategies and suggestions may function as guide and reference for upgrading the whole qualification of Chinese shipbuilding industry.
