After the Cold War, the U.S.-Japan security alliance did not come to the end with the collapse of Soviet Union, on the contrary, the Alliance maintains the general trend of strengthen, which had existed in the Cold War; in the new era of counter-terrorism, the Alliance has been further promoted to play an active role in the larger international stage. There are two levels of reasons account for the trend: first, the military strategies of United States ' and Japan directly cause the strengthened and internationalized Alliance; second, the root reason of the trend lies in the realistic theory of alliance. Specifically, there exists common interests between United State and Japan military strategies: the aim of U.S.' strategy is to keep military existence in East Asia under the U.S.-Japan security alliance; at the same time, Japan wants to safeguard national security depends on the Alliance. Theoretically, U.S. intends to keep the balance of power in the East Asia, which can deter China and take precautions on Japan simultaneously; Japan's two goals of safeguarding national security and becoming political power reflect the concepts in the realistic theory of alliance, i.e. the balance of threat and the balance of interest. In the end, through the study for the development of U.S.-Japan security alliance after the Cold War, we can clearly evaluate the security status in the East Asia and so stimulate the multilateral security regime in this region.
