China and the Association of South-east Asian Nations are the most vigorous area in economy in the world, which are more and more important to the world's economy. Because of the adjacency of the geographical position, the similarity of the climate and the approximate stage of the economy, they export many identical commodities. ASEAN countries have been regarding China as one of their most dangerous rivals all the time. Discussing the competition and the complementary of trade between the two parties has great directive significance to make the correct foreign trade policy to us.This paper adopts the method of positive research mainly, utilizing the revealed comparative advantage index, intra-industry trade index and the export similarity index, carries on quantitative analysis with the competition and complementary relation to the trade of China and ASEAN from different perspectives.At first, the paper compares the current situations of the trade between China and ASEAN, analyses their trade growth situation and their main export products, etc. Second, according to Standard International Trade Classification (SITC), on the basis of different criteria for classification, utilizing the revealed comparative advantage index of Balassa, the paper makes an analysis on the complementary index and comparative advantage index of trade products between China and ASEAN. Third, by calculating the intra-trade index between China and ASEAN, the paper demonstrates that the tendency of intra-industry between China and ASEAN is increasingly intensive. Fourth, adopting the export similarity index, the paper analyses the trade state of China and ASEAN from dimensions of market and product, which lays emphasis on both parties' competitive analysis mainly. Finally, according to the preceding analysis, this paper makes a conclusion that the trade of China and ASEAN relies mainly on complementary, and this complementary relation has the tendency to strengthen further. The total trade structure of two parties can be explained in the frame of H-O theory.
