The emergence of a knowledge-based economy as well as rapid developments in network information systems have fundamentally changed the way knowledge is exchanged. New mechanisms, models, and protocols are presently needed to adapt these changes to the larger societal framework, and are correspondingly becoming important fields of research in the domains of informatics and knowledge management. This dissertation first gives an overview of key concepts and tools relating to knowledge exchange, and uses the Brooks equation to predict the increasing importance that they will have on communication at both interpersonal and international scales. Secondly, a detailed analysis of the internal mechanisms and laws of knowledge exchange is given. followed by an appraisal of current models of intercommunication. This analysis culminates in the creation of a new model called the Knowledge Intercommunication Twin-helix Model. Finally, issues relating to intellectuals property are considered, with the recommendation that systems to protect developing knowledge be reinforced. Emphasis on the development of efficient communication mechanisms is key to deepening the pathways of knowledge and information exchange across all possible levels of discourse.
