ABSTRACT: Mass media play a very important role in modern diplomacy. Foreign entities tend to express interest in negotiation, to build confidence, and to mobilize public support for agreements through news coverage and influence on the public opinion. As one of function and means of diplomacy, media diplomacy obeys and serves the country's whole diplomatic strategies, which based on benefit of country security. And accompanied with political diplomacy, economic diplomacy, military diplomacy and cultural diplomacy, all of these consist of the Grand Diplomacy. America, the only superpower in the world, has many influential multinational media groups and pretty rich soft power. Also its practice of media diplomacy will provide valuable developing way for other countries. American media diplomacy had its origin from the war between American-Spain, and along with evolvement of media form from international broadcasting, satellite television to Internet it became more perfect. American government is the most important main body of American media diplomacy and push media diplomacy actively to promote its foreign policy by consummating organizations and press conference system, setting media agenda, making media events and controlling media in wartime. Media diplomacy also plays a special role in relationship between Sino-American. Besides, media diplomacy acts effectively depend on some important factors, such as relationship between government and media, ideology, media form and global communication, and so on.
