The comparative studies between the Thought of Chairman Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping is a hot topic in academic world and in recent years some achievements have been achieved in this aspect. However, a thoroughly macro comparative analysis on methodology in the two thoughts has little been touched on. The paper makes an overall compare to their common ground and each characteristic on the basis of present research achievements.The author holds that there is a common coherence in the theoretical origin and foundation, practical groundwork and mental contents in their methodologies. In their theoretical origin and foundation, they were influenced deeply by Marxism world view and Chinese traditional philosophy methodology; in practice, they were combined tightly with Chinese revolution and construction; in ideology, they are common in the methods of practical and realistic, mass channel, paddle their own canoe, contraventions analysis and investigation research.The author further insists that these two different kinds of methodologies have their own characteristics although there is some solidarity. There are differences between them in terms of form background and social historic conditions; and they also have conspicuous individual characteristics in terms of theoretical styles and expression forms; also in terms of their effect to social progress and development, the methodology of Mao Zedong is closely related with China's revolution and construction while the methodology of Deng Xiaoping is closely related with reform and open and socialism modernization; in terms of ideology, Deng's methodology has exceeded Mao's in the aspects of liberate thinking, more exoteric, abundant connotation and special contradiction analysis.The author also thinks that we will get some elicitation effect through the comparative studies as follows.
