The maritime transportation, with its advantage of being able to carry a quantity of goods with relatively low costs, plays a big role in international trades. China is a country boasting a coastline of 20 thousands miles long and numerous excellent natural ports, which provides favorable conditions for the development of the maritime transportation of our country. Over the last 20 years since the introduction of the reform and opening up, China has achieved magnificent progress in the area of maritime transportation, with a fleet of the notable scale, playing a big role in the promotion of the sustained development of the national economy.The maritime transportation, which is very important for conducting the international trades, is usually operated in two ways, that embodied in charter parties and that evidenced by bills of lading. Of all the kinds of transportation in the current world, the maritime transportation maintains the biggest proportion, and plays a significant role in promoting the development and prosperity of the international trades. Since the shipment is an indispensable link of the maritime transportation, the author makes some pertinent analysis of the possible problems that might appear in this phase.This dissertation is divided into 4 chapters for elaboration mainly. The first chapter gives a thorough introduction of the operation of the shipment of goods, which is further analyzed from a legal point with an emphasis laid on the study of the legal position of the freight handler. Chapter 2 focuses on the time that shipment operation would take up, and the relevant provisions concerning it in the trade contracts. In chapter 3, some comparative study has been done to analyze the relevant provisions in the contract of spot shipment and that stipulated in the general transportation contract. And some elaboration has been made on the problem of the choice of ports under the voyage charter parties. Chapter 4 concentrates on all kinds of disputes that might be coming forth during the period of shipment of goods.The author makes some researches on the above-mentioned aspects of the shipment problem, together with some studies and analysis about the legal position and practical operations in the other countries, and comes up with some tentative ideas.
