Japanese rising abruptly in modern times is a historical event which rather attracts people's attention. After Meiji Restoration, Japan transferred from feudalism to capitalist country, becoming an imperialism country during brief tens years. Japan caught up with the western advanced capitalist countries only in half century which they once conducted in 150 years. As to Japanese rapid development, an important reason is taking a shortcut in the process of modernization. Japan used the gap between it and western capitalist countries, studying and drawing on their experience for reference. From the Fundamental Law on Education of 1872 to the 1890 Imperial Rescript on Education, Japan followed the examples of the systems of French, American and German education, promulgated a series of decrees about education. In the process of studying western educational experience, Japan rapidly mastered the essence of western educational theory, system and practice and combined it with Japanese educational system's particular reality, forming educational theory and practice with Japanese characteristics. It enabled Japanese education in a high starting point and avoided hesitating in a low starting point like western capitalist countries, striving for time, which could catch up or outstrip them. This thesis is applied with historical and dialectical materialism, looking into the process and characteristic of Japan studying western education. On this base, the thesis also compares and analyses the modes of foreign countries studying advanced educational experience, making some suggestion which can benefit our country.
