China is a country with variety of minorites, most of them reside near border areas. Because of the population migration and border changes caused by historical reasons and natural factors, some minorities became cross-border ethnic groups, spread both in and out of China. These ethnic groups are separated by border lines, their social and economic development appear great differences. Jingpo/Kachin is a cross-border ethnic group with long history, reside in the border area among China, Myanmar and India. Their unique social structure and primitive religious belief have aroused great interests of anthropology and sociology researchers. After the second world war, turbulence in Myanmar and drug issues stunted Kachin's modernlization process. While Jingpo in China have made much progress in social and economic development, they are still perplexed by some negative factors. Through research the social and economic changes of Jingpo and Kachin in different time, as well as the different ethnic policies between China and Myanmar, this text tries to probe the positive and negative factors in their social and economic development process. The features of this text lie in two aspects: First, the object of study is original. Jingpo/Kachin is an important ethnic group in southwest China, but relevant research works are limited and outdated, their present situation cannot be reflected. Second, this text tries to comprehensively analysis the social, economic, religious changes between Jingpo and Kachin, it can help readers to better understand the theme of this text.
