Traditional language teaching method regarded grammar as the most significant element of English teaching, so that language knowledge become the final goal while students'competence was totally neglected. According to the Communicative Competence theory proposed by Hymes, language knowledge should be connected with usage. And besides language knowledge, competence should include the capability of knowing how to use language appropriately and effectively. Since communicative teaching method was introduced into China in 1980s, grammar teaching has been faced with great controversy. Grammar knowledge has turned into the aim of being repelled. Under such situation, primary school and junior middle school apparently pay more attention to practical usage while ignore language form. However, forced by the collage entrance examination and some other objective factors, the communicative teaching method which has been advocated for many years is difficult to be carried out.Through the research, it is found that English teachers have some misunderstanding about communicative teaching method. They either hold that grammar is the core of foreign language, or believe new teaching materials are to weaken grammar content. This paper analyzes current situation and the problems of grammar teaching under the new curriculum criteria, combine relative theory about grammar teaching and communicative method, and discuss how to make communicative method involve into grammar teaching through analysis by inquiry and interview, prove that communicative grammar teaching can arouse students'interests more and get better result.This dissertation consists of six parts. The first part is introduction, stating the meaning of grammar teaching under the new curriculum criteria, and the aim and framework of this paper. The second part is literature review; it generalizes the evolution of grammar teaching and communicative method literature. The third part is theoretical foundation; it sums up the theory of applying communicative method to grammar teaching. The fourth part is survey and analysis of the perspectives about the communicative grammar teaching of teachers'and students'based on the communicative grammar classroom teaching. The questionnaire and interview involve two high middle schools from Qinhuangdao, Hebei province. The fifth part is an experiment; it is to testify the communicative language teaching method is more effective than traditional ones in grammar teaching. The sixth part is the conclusion.
