I have already carried out initial research on home sign, mainly consisting of a summary of past research in the area, field work, and initial analysis. Using images based on the 200 word Swadesh list, I conducted a survey of nine adult deaf people, four of whom had already acquired sign language in the deaf community and five of whom were isolated deaf individuals who had had no contact with other deaf, had not learned sign language, nor had been to school to learn Chinese. I obtained two types of data:home sign of sign language fluent deaf adults from memory and home sign as currently used by isolated deaf people. A total of 1,239 individual sign tokens and 156 compound lexical items were obtained. Of these collected forms, home sign notions of isolated deaf numbered 996. The average number of home sign notions was about 200 for each isolated deaf individual. There were 122 notions which repeatedly appeared in the home sign of the five consultants; a ratio of repetition in excess of 60%.In summary, looking at my own and other's research, I can say that home sign:1. Is language-like visual semiological system;2. Is visually based and uses hand gestures as its medium;3. Is used by isolated deaf people during everyday life to communicate with family members;4. Possesses a complete process of coding and decoding with each gesture having a signifciant and reference, all the basic traits of a sign; and5. Possesses both formal and semantic relation between its own signs, thus forming its own semiological system. After studying the phonology, morphology, syntax, and communicative ability of the speakers of home sign, I have confirmed that home sign has the basic structure of language, is stable to a certain extent, and can to a certain extent successfully express information. It is language in an early stage of development.
