The Chinese civilization with along history of five thousand years has letfvaluable cultural heritage. Folk sports and its culture in China, by virtue of richcontent,diverse forms and long history, have become an impotrant part of Chinesetradition and culture.lt carries the direction of value, influences the way of living andreflects self-recognition for a nation.Folk sports exert the influence on many aspectsin which it helps improve the standard of human health, strengthen cohesive force of anation, enhance national unity and promote the advancement of social culture.Withthe thorough, systemic and scientific knowledge of folk sports and its culture, it isbeneficial for people to preserve, inherit and promote folk sports and its culture.Since the Opium War, the great changes of China took place, ranging fromfeudalism to socialism,from the introduction of Marxist to socialistmodernization. Atfer the Third Plenary Session of the11th Central Committee of theChinese Communist Party, reform and opening has been deeply implemented and thepace of social transformation has speeded up.With the development of society^reasonsof social changes appear much more diverse, comprehensive and complicated.Socialchanges bring about many new hopes, as well as more concern and fear, as if it was adouble-edged sword that was deeply dabbed into every level of society.In the past,folk sports developed in the closed circumstance and then formed a particular form ofsports. Nowadays,folk sports, which are exposed to the new environment witheconomy, population, social structure, social values, ways of living, science andtechnology and culture?inevitably are affected and restricted.Nongtang game, as themain event of folk sports in Shanghai and the major part of Shanghai sports culture,also is subjected to the development dilemma in the process of rapid changes ofShanghai.The thesis takes Shanghai Nongtang as an example and study methods includeliterature review?interview, questionnaire and statistics. Through the rapid socialchanges in Shanghai since the establishment of China, the thesis researches into Shanghai Nongtang game and its culture in the aspects like prosperity, loss,regressionand recovery, for the purpose of providing the theoretical reference for thepreservation and modernization of the folk sports in China.
