In the research on language learning, linguists find out that reading plays an importantrole. Without reading, people cannot get either knowledge or information. Students’reading ability, to a great degree, determines their language level. However, as a primary school English teacher, the author finds that pupils’ biggestproblem and difficulty on early reading is to set up the relationship between prints andspoken words as English is their foreign language.Phonics instruction can help pupils decode new words in their reading and promotetheir spelling ability. As long as they recognize the relationship between meaning andsound, they can infer the word’s meaning after recognizing it.This study, based on the reading development phase theory, information processtheory and mother language transfer theory, explores the effective role phonics plays inpromoting reading teaching in primary schools. This study mainly uses the methods of thequestionnaire survey and the teaching experiment. The following conclusions are drawnfrom the research:(1) Phonics can improve pupils’ phonological awareness.(2) Phonics can promote pupils’ reading ability.(3) Phonics can enhance pupils’ spelling ability.(4) Phonics can arouse pupils’ interest in reading.
