In the new period, contemporary college students, the purely’spending’ group, are affected by the factors such as the arising of diversified values, the ignoring of thrifty education in college, the mistake of thrift education in family and the weakness of self-control, they tend to follow the mainstream blindly and make individual comparison flauntily, moreover, they consume irrationally and excessively for their own enjoyment. Since the18th National Congress of CCP, the whole society has been carrying out a series of activities to advocate frugality, which includes distributing instruction of’eight regulations’ and ’practice economy, combat waste’, building of OA system, campaigning for’clear your plate’, proposing thrift legalization and advocating a civilized lifestyle. College students have become the main group of consumption, these social activities raise new requirement for their consumption views. Therefore, the significance of strengthening thrifty education can not be ignored. It not only helps students foster new consumption views, also becomes a functional guide for individual life and social development. The article is based on the theory of thrifty consumption, and thoroughly reviews thrifty consumption in ancient times, modern times and contemporary times respectively, so that college students could understand the long-standing thrift culture of Chinese nation and drop the thinking that frugality is gone out of the date. Under the premise of knowing that thrift and to expand domestic demand is not contradictory, and understanding the difference between thrift consumption and asceticism, college students have to build new concept on thrift consumption which requires them to live within their means, have a rational concept, make the best use of things, cost effectively, conserve resources and protect the environment. On the basis of the parts above, I will illustrate the importance of intensifying thrifty education from the angle of individual and society respectively, and analyze the phenomena and reasons of extravagance among college students, and then I will explore the measures from all the four aspects of society, college, family and individual to foster college students’ thrifty quality and thereby promote students to establish thrifty consumption, guide students toward thrifty behavior and cultivate students to make a good habit of thrifty consumption.
