Function is the important foundation of modern mathematics, One of the mainline of high school mathematics teaching is to fully grasp the concept of function and its corresponding mathematical thinking method. When students learn the concept of the function, their knowledge will change from the specific quantitative relations in real life to the number of abstract relations. However, because of the complexity of function concept and the diversity of function representation, the teaching of function concept is very difficult. In order to put forward teaching strategy which adapts to the contemporary high school students, this paper studies further into the understanding of the function concept, based on the research of various scholars and specialists.As a new evaluation tool, concept map helps teachers evaluate students’ mathematical understanding, so this research mainly adopts the concept map tasks and two means of questionnaire. Through introducing the knowledge of concept map to the students of Grade land let them draw function concept map, to evaluate the high grade students’ understanding the concept of function. The test carried on to test the students’understanding of function concept, in order to study high school students’ understanding of function concept. Through the analysis of the concept map and the test questionnaire, mainly get the following conclusion:1. The situation of Grade1students’ understanding of function concept is not very good, and there is a great deal of difference between good students and bad students;2. In general, the understanding level of High school students’function concept is on the rise, and there is little difference between Grade1and Grade2students’ understanding of function concepts;3. High school students’ understanding of the function definition is varied, their understanding of different function representation are imbalance, their masteries of nature of the function is not very good, in addition, the application of functions level is lower, and some students have difficulties in understanding the function of practical life problems.Based on theory and research analysis, this paper puts forward some suggestions on teaching of the function concept, with some examples, and there are three main aspects of the proposal:1. To apply concept map in the teaching of the function;2. The function teaching should focus on students’understanding of different representations;3. The function should be changed into daily life when teaching, in the hope of providing some references for senior high school mathematics teaching.
