Concept is the basic unit of our thinking. The concept of thingsand people is reflected by people during the period of time, we can define theconcept of sport in the same way. In ancient times, in China, there was a meaning of“sport activity”, which is used nowadays, however it wasn’t considered as a sport inthose times. Today, both China and Japan took the term “sport” from westernmodern culture. Moreover, when after the Meiji Restoration Japan had developed asa strongest country in Asia, China started to learn physical science from Japan.To explain the development of sport in both China and Japan, in this work isused literature, interviews and other methods, which helps to explain the question.Still, in modern times, in China and Japan sport is continuing to develop.According to common historical characteristics in the countries and the period,people’s understanding of this science is different. In spite of that, there are a lot ofsimilarities in the same concept of the two cultures–Chinese and Japanese.In theend of Qing era, to Chinese school system were introduced gym classes. That featurecame from Europe. Because Japan learnt sport gym’s culture from Europe, it had alot of common aspect with China in sport’s developing period. The image of whichuse can be of the sport, was different in China and Japan. As good example is warperiod in the countries: in Japan, before the war started, soldiers were preparedphysically. They were taught to fight for Emperor and country. As for Chinese, themain thing they had been told is to protect their country.Since World War II was over,Japanese scholars believed that sport is supposed to be as a health-supportivemethod and muscle training method. Since present times, Chinese and Japanesescholars are discussing the use of sport’s concept in different degrees, synonyms andother issues.
