In1960s,Peter Hall put forward the concept of world city. The concept only wonmeager agreement in western urban geography field then,it has not gained attentionand recognition of the most researchers for a period afterward. As globalizationprevails,“world city” is receiving more and more attention, however, diverse genresis surging out and raising more confusion. Due to this circumstance,I assume it wouldbe particularly important to analyze the evolution of the “world city” conceptthroughly according to the perspective of the pioneer Peter Hall and on comparisonof different view analysis. In the60s cold thinking mode, western urban geography field was dominated by“nation urban system”school.Peter Hall was the first to notice that some particularcities occupy important place in both global economic and political structure beyondtheir nations. He classified7cities as the global influential cities. Though this theorygot support from American scholar Gottmann by his “Megalopolis”,little wasunknown about it in70s.In the80s, Friedmann, Sassen et al. put forth “world city hypothesis”,“globalcity” etc.one after another, which caused great impact on the theory proposed in60s by Peter Hall. Peter positively respond to those revolutionary views in world cityresearch area while establishing his own new world city theory based on the originalraw theory. He applied the new theory in research and practical guidanceunprecedentedly.Peter Hall also has been trying to expand the new theory application todevelopment of mega-city region in Yangtze river delta and pearl river delta, whichundoubtedly was significant in enlightenment of Chinese constructing world city.
