To develop middle school and high school students’ability to explore history, Teachers need to guide students to actively participate in the teaching environment, Teachers guide students to ask questions, research, make explorations and learn in practice depending on actively interaction among teachers and students. They should pursue common development, therefore teachers could stimulate students’interests in exploring the problems of history and meet their learning needs through active participation. They would all be immensely benefited in this teaching activity.With the expansion of the Western Learning deepening, Republican intellectuals began to come into contacting with the New History of Western thoughts, and new educational concepts, which had a huge impact on the role of history teaching.The old teaching of history had been insufficient to meet the academic requirements of the time, the development requirements of the students’learning needs, curriculum standards and historical discipline system. At that time scholars had recognized the goal of historical education was to help students develop the initiative. To make the goal come true needed lots of great efforts, not just talk. Traditional history class taught political history as the core, one teacher taught blackboard transcribe notes as the main teaching method, which ignored the initiative of middle school and high school students, injured their interest in learning the history, but also contrary to the middle and high school students age characteristics and learning characteristics. Thus, the Republic of China scholars had recognized the importance of training middle school and high school students the ability to explore history, which contains He Bingsong, Lv Simian,Gu Jiegang and other historical scholars, they put forward their views for the teaching of history including training students inquiry historical skills. They did a plenty of practice also.Based on the above thinking, This article contains people’s anthology of the Republic of China, history education journals anthology, historians journal articles, the syllabus of the Republic of China as well as basic research data about the history teaching ideas of He Bingsong, LvSimian and Gu Jiegang. Here are several following sections to study the situation of training middle school and high school students’ability to explore history during the period of the Republic of China. The first part discusses the backgrounds and the main reasons for training middle school and high school students’ability to explore history during the period of the Republic of China. It is about the relationship among The Developing, the "Revolution","New Education Movement" and "New history" ideological trends. There are also some talks about the role of the drawbacks in traditional historical class, academic reform as well as the students’learning characteristics and age characteristics in promoting the Developing;The second part contains scholars’consider about developing middle school and high school students’ability to explore history, including some introduce of relevant teaching scholars’views, there are also some presentation for the method of ability training in class during that time;The third part explores the relationship between history curriculum standards and the training for improving the middle school and high school students’ability to explore the history during the period of the Republic of China, The history curriculum standards introduced the capability requirements and how to train students to explore the history. Specifically the historical syllabus in1923and the middle school history curriculum outline in1929.The last part summaries a number of factors which might contribute to the influence of developing middle school and high school students’ability to explore history during the period of the Republic of China, the third part also talks about the defects during the activities for the characteristics of students in that time and the implementation of the results.
