A Study On The Spouse Preference Of Urban Married People

People have developed different mechanisms to cope with the mating preference to have a better chance to inherit their genes. For the female contestants, they prefer the male ones who have more resources and have enough energy to take care of their children. So, they pay more attention to the male’s economic powder. While, the male prefer the female who have more potential to give birth to babies because the youth and attractiveness is the symbol of health. So, the male pay more attention to the female’s age and appearance. According to the content analysis of the 600 marriage advertisements in the Baihe, there are differences between sex in the mate-seeking criteria. The female contestants have higher expectations to the male’s income, house, education background etc. By contrast, the male have less specific requirement. In further research, we have adopted the IAT to test the implicit idea of mate selection with introducing the concept of sense of controlling. The result revealed that the male pay more attention to the female’s characteristics than the material aspects; while, the female pay more attention to the male’s material aspects than the characteristics, which can be explained in the theory of evolutionary psychology, involving the result that the sense of controlling does not have much effect on the mate preference.
