With the inclining economic development in the recent years, sports and fitnessstart to draw more awareness among the people, such as the rising popularity ofbasketball games held by the universities. Nowadays, basketball has gradually becomea project that plays a significant role in the personal development of Chinese universitystudents, especially since the expansion in the university admissions.During one of the past basketball discussions conferences held in Ningbo,Zhejiang, Li Yuanwei, the director from the National Administration of Sports, raised anew viewpoint that basketball games should be “competitive, entertaining, beneficial, and cultural”. Not only did this redefine our understanding of the modern basketballgames, it also pointed out the importance of constructing a basketball culture thatcollaborates closely with the harmonious socialist society.Based on the traditional format of education, our nation always emphasized theteaching of the technical skills, the strengthening of physical abilities, and theenhancement of the performance in competitions, while we ignored the importanceof “popularization” and “delight” that should be included in the basketball teachingfeatures, and the physical, as well as psychological needs of the students. However, with the further development of the educational revolution, it presents a new challengein the educational field to make basketball teaching a more quality-oriented education, and help the students build the mind-set for life-long sports affection.Today, Entertainment Basketball is spreading across the country as a brand newform of basketball sports, and it greatly attracts millions of teenagers with its uniquestyle and charming features. Thus it is seen crucial to discuss the effectivedevelopment, the approach of expansion, as well as the effective organization of thegames. These discussions are believed to have an enormous impact on students’perspectives towards life-long fitness. This study was conducted using methods such as literature research, expertinterview, logical and numerical analysis, etc. to investigate among9differentuniversities on topics including: the current state of development of EntertainmentBasketball; the level of participation of the staff and students in the games; as well asthe state of the sports facilities in the universities. Analyses on the inevitability andthe viability of introducing Entertainment Basketball into university education systemyield following conclusions:1. Entertainment Basketball, consisting of street basketball as its core, generalityas its theme and self-expression as its main format, has become the continuation andadvancement of modern basketball sports. Entertainment basketball has diluted theimpact of competition results, lessened physical obligation, and emphasized theobjective more towards the entertainment effect. Its main contents include:3-A-SideTournament, One on One “Bullfight”, Three-Point Shootout, Vertical Jump, SlamDunk Contest, and Skills Challenge, etc.2. Through the research and analysis of the current state of EntertainmentBasketball organisation in universities, it was observed that the establishment ofEntertainment Basketball still remained at an early stage of development in China. Thelevel of student participation was low, and there was a lack of sensible organizationand management. The system was yet to be developed into a more organised andsustained scheme. Overly emphasizing on simply imitating others would limit theformation of a system that is specifically characterized to Chinese culture.3. Traditional basketball teaching mainly aimed at standardizing the techniquesand skills. The insufficient attention on building students’ interests made it difficult tobecome a life-long sport, despite the fact that it enabled students’ to master essentialtechniques and tactics. Therefore, in the course of sports education, it is reasonable tointroduce the teaching of Entertainment Basketball. 4. The study showed that most universities had sufficient capability of holdingEntertainment Basketball courses. The universities presented great interest inreforming P.E. education, especially in prioritizing Entertainment Basketball duringthe reform. Furthermore, the universities had relevant facilities which satisfiedcertain requirements, for example all-weather gymnasium and equipment. Also, theactive participation of staff and students contributed greatly to the spiritual support forintroducing Entertainment Basketball into higher educational institutions. This alljustified the necessity and viability of introducing Entertainment Basketball course intohigher educational institutions.Suggestions for future improvements:1. Intensify the research and development in formalising the teaching ofEntertainment Basketball2. Include Entertainment Basketball into university sports education syllabus3. Increase the emphasis on Entertainment Basketball4. Launch professional training for Entertainment Basketball teaching staffImplement a gradual increase in difficulty of the Entertainment Basketball course...
