Education and liberalism is an important issue.In the late Qing Dynasty,to save China from subjugation,Yan Fu introduced liberalism from the west.From then on,the issue aroused concern.After the Republic of China,specially the period of May-4th Movement,liberalism became a school of thought and had a broad effect on education. Entering 1930s,the voice of education control became louder and louder.But the discussion of Education and liberalism didn’t be quiet.Educational world of China even published the special of Education and liberalism..In the crisis of 1930s,the discussion’s background,the main issues,the conclusion and enlightenment is worth studying.The study of this discussion can enrich the content of the 1930s educational liberalism,innovate the methods of comparative education and enlighten the current education reform.The paper is divided into four chapters:Chapter one mainly introduces the origin,value and status of this paper.Chapter two mainly introduces the whole story and background of the discussion of educational liberalism.Chapter three is the core of this paper,interpreting the discussion,including the meaning of liberalism and educational liberalism;education should be liberal or not liberal;should liberalism be educational aim of method and liberalism education’s principle and method.Chapter four is the conclusion of this paper.One,the connotation of liberalism conforms to the times;two,individual freedom had never been education’s ultimate aim and pursue;three,liberalism and control-ism in education area aren’t completely opposite.It offers some enlightenment to today’s educational theory and practice.one.we should advocate freedom which is under the construction of rationalism;two,we should promote the unification of ideal and reality of education;three,education really needs to hold the degree of freedom.
