With the deepening reform and opening up, China has established a wider and more intimate communication and connection with the world, which makes more and more people realize the importance of English as a common language. During the elementary education period, English plays a very important role. Grammar-translation method is the earliest introduced language pedagogy, and it made irreplaceable contribution to the development of English teaching in China. However, because of the inflexibility and ignorance of listening and speaking, people started to consider it out-dated, which leaded to the emergence of some new pedagogy like Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) or Communicative Approach. This thesis discourses the necessity to apply grammar-translation method in English teaching in junior high schools by not only analyzing the problems of English study but also referring to the New Curriculum Standard. Meanwhile, the author tries to find the complementation and similarity of these two different pedagogies to illustrate the reasonability of integrating them when teaching grammar, reading, listening and writing. Teachers should exert advantages of each method so as to improve English study.There are six parts in this thesis. The first part is preface which states the status quo and tendency of the study of pedagogy as well as the problems among junior high school students in English study. After that the author describes some basic theories known as grammar-translation method, communicative language teaching and routine of student’ study. In the third part, the author analyzes systematically the merits and demerits of both teaching methods, and explores the possibility and necessity of integrating them. The fourth part discourses the complementary relation between these two methods. Then it’s the fifth part in which I discuss how to integrate grammar-translation method and communicative approach in actual teaching. As the conclusion part, the sixth part is aimed to reinforce the importance to integrate these two methods.
