Grammar teaching has been a hot issue in foreign language teaching. In China, for a long time, the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is one of the main ways of teaching English. And grammar is very important in learning a foreign language. However, many people cannot speak a single word, let alone they use English for communication even after they have been studying English for many years. The reason is that the GTM ignores to develope students’communicative competence. In recent years, as the Communicative Approach(CA) is introduced to our country, training the communicative competence of students becomes the main goal of English teaching. The effect of grammar teaching has been weakened. However, the English grammar teaching mode which only uses CA does not reach the desired goal. After a period of practice and introspection, people finally realize that the way of weakening even canceling grammar teaching has caused many disadvantages. And then many scholars begin to think that the GTM should be combined with the CA.At present, most English educators in high school agree that the CA should be combined with the GTM in the process of teaching and that way is also suitable for high school students to learn English grammar. But they fail to point out clearly which grammar items are more suitable for the GTM and which for the CA. This thesis attempts to find a more suitable way for high school students in China to study English grammar by using the classification teaching mode.This thesis consists of5chapters totally.The first chapter is Introduction, which mainly introduces the background, reasons, purpose and significance of the research.The second chapter is Literature Review. This thesis mainly discusses the present situation of the study about the English grammar teaching in middle school in China. At the same time it presents the theoretical basis of this research respectively from the angle of linguistics and pedagogy.The third chapter is the main content, which discusses the establishment of classified teaching model. It respectively introduces the reasons, basis and standard of grammar items classification, and then this thesis focuses on the specific content of classified teaching model through some relevant examples.Chapter Four is the practical application of the classified teaching model. This chapter points out the research method, steps, results and defects. The research objects are some students of grade one in high school of Jingzhou city, Hubei province. Chapter five is the Conclusion. This thesis points out the advantages and disadvantages of classification teaching mode, based on the summary of the research.
