Over the years, the Grammar Translation Method plays an important role in thewhole classroom English teaching in middle school. This kind of teaching methodgoes straight to the theme and saves the teaching time. But the explanation of teacheris often at the expense of students’ participation and interaction. With the rapiddevelopment of China’s economy and opening to the outside world, single Englishteaching model and teaching method have been unable to meet the needs of modernstudents and the development of national economy. However, the result of EnglishTeaching with exclusive use of the communicative approach has not provided theexpected results since it was introduced to China. How to handle the relationshipbetween these two kinds of teaching method? This paper will focus on the effectiveintegration of the Communicative Approach and the Grammar Translation Method toimprove the students‘written examination achievement and communicative ability atpresent in China.This paper used the literature method and experimental contrast method to do theresearch. It discusses the basic characteristics and advantage of the GrammarTranslation Method. It also analyzes the based theory of Communication Approach.With the selection of90students in a high school of Guangzhou (the experimentalclass and the control class), the writer did the test analysis. This teaching processlasted one semester. This paper puts forward two assumptions:1)The effectiveintegration of the Communicative Approach and the Grammar Translation Methodcan improve students written examination achievement than the Grammar TranslationMethod;2)Effective integration of the Communicative Approach and the GrammarTranslation Method can be more effective than the Grammar Translation Method inimproving students‘communicative ability. The writer gave students a pre-test ongrammar knowledge, and on this basis using the integration of CommunicativeApproach and the Grammar Translation Method to teach the students grammar.Besides, the writer collected the relevant data of two classes before the experimentand after the experiment. The data showed that after receiving the integrated Grammar Translation Method and Communicative Approach, students‘writtenexamination achievement and communicative competence have more obviousimprovement than only accept the Traditional Grammar Translation teaching method.So, the writer puts forward that the integration of the grammar translation method andcommunicative approach is the most consistent with the teaching method of Chinesemiddle school students’ English learning, both complement each other.
