England is one of the earlier countries to establish Universities in Middle Ages.And as the first university of England, the creation process was affected by prototype University of Paris University. But because of the special circumstances of England,Oxford University had a certain typical.Its education mode, management method,autonomy spirit exerted an important impact on the later development of university education.The position of chancellor was the embodiment of the particularity of Oxford University.The chancellorship has an important position in the early development course of Oxford university. It is not generated from the outset, but in the struggle with the various political forces in medieval England. The chancellors of Oxford University subjected to the Church at the beginning, but with the support of monarchy, their power strengthened gradually.And through the struggle with the church and the city, University won its autonomy. The chancellors played a significant role during the process to get rid of the control of bishops, it can be said that chancellors are the representative and embodiment of Oxford University autonomy spirit.But as the strengthen of the autocratic monarchy at the late middle ages,the chancellorship of Oxford University also began to transition from the university leader to an honorary title.Chancellors’ responsibility is quite widespread: as the supreme leader of the university, they presided over the internal administrative, financial and judicial affairs to ensure the normal operation of the University, such as presiding Teachers Assembly Management, managing University chests, presiding over the chancellor’s court,conducting probate, keeping the peace of university, granting degree and so on; As the representatives of the university, they needed to deal with the relationship between the university and the outside world properly, such as seeking privileges and protection from the church and the king, collecting funds and other donors, fighting for the rights, and participating in governance of the city of Oxford to create a good environment for the development of the university. Researching for the chancellorship of University will make us have a deeper understanding to this position, and benefit from the useful part to provide some reference for university chancellors in our country.
