At present, in the information-based society, people are going through a new era when information and knowledge are updated promptly. Therefore, "lifelong learning" has become an important feature of modern social education. As the education people received in schools are limited and it’s impossible for schools to teach students all the knowledge, so mastering the ability of learning independently has been a basic skill for people in modern society. As a kind of new teaching mode, independent reading breaks the bond of traditional Chinese teaching mode to conform to the educational ideas of new curriculum reform, which plays an important role in cultivating students’ independent reading ability and “lifelong learning” mode. With the implementation and deepening of the new curriculum reform, the traditional cramming teaching mode--- teachers give a lecture and students listen to it has been changed to certain extent.However, some problems still remain in the course of reading teaching, which needs the attention of teachers and researchers. Real implementation independent reading teaching,teachers need to deeply understand the connotation of independent reading, independent reading teaching in the accurate positioning of self, understand as a teacher is leader of student learning,and students is the real subject of study. Thus, in the independent reading teaching process,teachers should give full play to the dominant position of students. More importantly, teachers should teach students reading methods and techniques. Students under the guidance of teachers,give full play to their initiative, to actively communicate with text, dialogue, through their own perception and thinking, deepen understanding of the text to understand the implication of which thoughts and feelings. This study focuses on the improvement of secondary school students’ independent reading ability. Some problems existing in Chinese teaching are pointed out through the actual investigation and observation in the process of practice, and the strategies to improve the ability of independent reading of secondary school students has been put forward as well.This thesis consist of five parts: The first part mainly introduces some theories. It mainly discusses the concept of independent reading, the theoretical basis of the implementation of independent reading teaching and the requirements of the new curriculum standard. The importance of independent reading is confirmed through the narrative of these theories. The problems existing in secondary school students’ independent reading and their reasons are analyzed through the observation of Chinese independent reading teaching and questionnaires survey in the second part. The third part puts forward the strategies to improve the independent reading ability of secondary school students. From the aspect of teachers, the following five aspects are proposed: cultivating students’ interests for reading, encouraging students to readingindependently, playing the guiding role of teachers in the teaching process effectively, imparting reading methods to students, strengthening the guidance of extracurricular reading. The fourth part is mainly for reflections. Reflections are mainly made from several aspects, such as teachers,students, relationship between teachers and students, and the process of cultivating independent reading ability. The last part is epilogue.The language teacher take various teaching strategies in the process of independent reading teaching, finally mentioned in order to improve the students’ independent reading ability of the fundamental purpose.
