A combined use of different media has been applied in chemistry instruction in China's secondary schools. However, this application is not extensive or systematic, for the functions of individual media and their combinations have not yet been fully exploited. To explore the best way of utilizing multi-media in chemistry teaching in terms of its design, mode and process, a research was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of multi-media aided chemistry instruction in secondary schools. The case study involved two groups of students, one serving as the experimental class and the other control class. During the experiment, the subjects were provided with multi-media aided classroom instruction, prior to and after which, both quantitative and qualitative analyses were made of the subjects' performance. The pre-test score suggested no significant differences between the two groups of students, while the post-test clearly indicated a big advantage of the experimental class over the control class. The experiment proves that the use of multi-media in classroom instruction is greatly conducive to improving teaching qualities by eliminating negative factors and utilizing positive ones in the process.Based on the author's teaching practice and her limited reading of related literature, this article suggests that a combined use of different media is a most effective way of improving chemistry instruction in secondary schools. The design and application of multi-media in classroom instruction has a solid theoretical basis in terms of academic psychology, media-transmission, audio-visual theories, etc. The choice of educational media and teaching resources should be suitable to the teaching objectives and specific groups of students so that it can be reasonable, timely, appropriate, adaptable, systematic and effective. In this way, a new way of teaching chemistry in the secondary school, with its characteristics of being interactive between the teacher and students, of big content capacity, quick classroom tempo and effectiveness, is likely to improve the present teaching situation in China's secondary schools.
