This study adopted a 3×2×2 design, using 213 Chinese primary students in Grade Five and Six as subjects, investigated the different achievement goal's influence to intrinsic motivation, anxiety level and performance between failure condition and success condition which were manipulated by instruction. The three factors were groups (mastery goal, performance-approach goal, performance-avoidance goal), two conditions (success condition and failure condition), grades (grade 5 and 6). The results showed that,1.The students of mastery goal reported the highest level of, performance but the lowest anxiety level in both conditions among three groups.2. Performance-approach goal students reported higher level of intrinsic motivation and performance in failure condition than performance-avoidance goal students, but the difference of anxiety level was no significant between two groups. There was no significant difference of intrinsic motivation and anxiety level between performance-avodiance goal and performance-approach goal students in success condition. The performance of performance-approach students was slightly higher than performance-avoidance students.3. Compared with success condition, failure condition didn't impair intrinsic motivation of mastery goal students. There was no significant difference of intrinsic motivation between two conditions. In both condition, the students reported high intrinsic motivation. There were appropriate higher anxiety level under the failure condition, but the performance of failure condition was higher than success condition.4. Compared with failure condition, the performance-approach students reported higher intrinsic motivation under success condition, but lower anxiety level. The difference of the performance-approach students' performance was no significant between two conditions.5. Compared with success condition, the performance-avoidance students reported lower intrinsic motivation and performance, but higher anxiety level.6. Failure condition impaired the performance of students in Grade Six. However, there was no significant difference for the students of Grade Six.
