In 1998, Ministry of Education sanctioned setting up the college of online education, carried on the experimental unit of online education, In the hope of relying on these key universities to realize great-leap-forward development of online education.The rapid development of information and communication technology represented by network and multimedia technology, the approaching of information society and knowledge-based economy and the realization of life-long education, life-long learning and learning featured society have brought opportunities and challenges to international educational field. Currently, most of the 67 Colleges of online education open BBS on their homepage or in the network courses, offer learning support and help for students. While, at the same time, most students haven't accustomed to this form of online interaction, still lack of necessary skills for online interaction, the online interaction bothered by psychological obstacles, and the positive and effective atmosphere for interaction still haven't formed.In this paper, the online interaction of over 4000 freshman enrolled by South China Normal University college of online education in autumn 2002 on the BBS of the course named Distance Learning Method was researched, the author divided the whole study process into 3 periods, using action research, launched observation, analyze and research in the following aspects: factors affect instructor-learner interaction, how to form positive atmosphere for interaction? What should instructors do to organize and direct learners to discuss and communicate? What should colleges of online education do to support and manage students' study by using of BBS. Then, opened distance learning forum in the homepage of college of online education, and carried out a four-period action research. Finally, some related investigations and interviews were carried out to examine the difference of the opinion to questions of learners of different sex, age, major and type of enrollment.This research comes to the following results: BBS is an effective tool to bring students support and service in distance education, and is a good web community for communication among students, instructors and colleges, and for college to solve students' problem in learning, work, psychology and emotion. It plays a critical role in maintaining the students' motive forlearning and ensure the quality of distance education The main factors that effect the interaction in BBS is the topic of discuss, instructor's active participation and guidance, etc. the responsibility of instructor in online interaction should be direct and help the learning of students, organize and encourage discussion, to be Consultation and policymaker of the information and give students emotional help. The results of this research have reference meanings to South China Normal University college of online education and other colleges in this form to carry out problem solving and interaction activity in course-based BBS and forum.
