General education integrates educational ideal with curriculum practice. As an educational ideal, it runs through the process of education; as a curriculum practice, it integrates intensely with specialized education and aims to make student have fine judgment and insight Nowadays , with the effect of general education in higher education becoming more and more important , general education has been a way to ameliorate crises which specialized education brought.This paper contains four parts.Part one: Beginning with analyzing the concept of general education, integrate its traditional meaning, establish the aim and importance of general education in higher education.Part two: Describe briefly the history of general education in American higher education before 1980', make clear the development of general education in American education.Part three: Introduce mainly since 1980', how American higher education has faced to all changes, and reformed on the basis of direction of general education.Part four: Take Wu Han University as an example, analyze mainly general education in Chinese higher education , compare the general education in Chinese with it in American, and put forward my suggestion to improve higher education in our country.
