The basic definition of bilingual education is that at least two languages are used as instruction and study media. It should not be viewed only as the method to learn a second or foreign language. The aims of bilingual education are quite different in different country, and which will influence the types of bilingual education and the level of bilingual proficiency. The thesis differentiates and analyses the definitions such as bilingual curriculum, bilingual instruction, bilingual proficiency, bilingual school.The definition of immersion bilingual education is that schooling where some or most subject content is taught through a second or foreign language. Immersion bilingual education derives from Canadian educational experiments. Based on the Baker's analysis model, this thesis introduces and analyses the practical experiences and , research findings in Canada, concentrating the variables as context, input, process and output. This part emphasizes the language strategies in immersion classroom and the research on the student and their success. The problems and limitations of Canadian immersion programs are also involved in this part, including the reason of success.In China, many school have carried out and will carry out experiments of the Chinese/English bilingual teaching. We must realize that its aim is to improve all the students' English proficiency not just for those whose English proficiency is very good. We must know that bilingual teaching is not only the method of learning the foreign language. From the comparative perspective, the thesis analyses the Chinese conditions in the same way. Before implements bilingual teaching, we should establish and pass the law for the bilingual teaching, enhance the education of Chinese as the mother tongue, set up the distinct instruction target, train the teacher, and develop the bilingual curriculum.The thesis also introduces the different types and development tendency of bilingual education, and the different language allocations in bilingual methodology.
