| In china, as we know, in foreign language learning, most language classrooms are teacher-centered. This approach, however, has serious drawbacks in practice so that students are thrown into a role of passivity and students lack opportunities of using and practicing the target language. Therefore, students lose their confidence in learning. All these causes will lead to the students' reticence in the classroom. Although teachers have been made great efforts to practice students-centered approach of teaching and learner autonomy in recent years, in some of the English classes, especially in the middle school class, teachers still dominate the class. How to get students involved in the language learning is a challenge for the language teachers.This is a case study and it focuses on cooperative learning. Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught, but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. Students work through the assignment until all group members successfully understand and complete it. It can motivate students to learn and get academic achievements, and it can also enhance students' satisfaction with their learning experience and enhance students' self-esteem as well.Based on the European and American experience of foreign language teaching, together with the consideration of Chinese real situations, teacher try to promote cooperative learning in junior middle school classroom. It is one of the effective methods to train students' language communicative competence .It can get students interested in learning foreign language and improve their oral communicative competence.The case is based not only on the theoretical researches on the origin and development of cooperative learning, but also on the theories ofeducation and psychology as well as linguistics. And then, the article discusses the distinctions and relations among them,By promoting cooperative learning in the experimental class regularly and analyzing the data, the conclusion can be reached that this method helps to increase students grades and motivate their learning interests, create an authentic and good atmosphere for English learning. As a result, the oral communicative ability of foreign language can be improved.In a word, cooperative learning is more suitable for our foreign language teaching and more helpful to foster students'competence of communication. It is significant in the reformation in Chinese middle school English classroom teaching. |
