Students' beliefs about mathematics and mathematics learning can have a substantial impact on their learning in mathematics, their enjoyment of mathematics, and their motivation in mathematics classes. This thesis has a dual focus with respect to such beliefs.First, a questionnaire survey was carried out on a group of 120 technical secondary school students and a group of 87 synthetic high school students in a key technical secondary school of Qingpu district, Shanghai, a group of 113 high school students of Jiangsu province and a group of 54 adults to measure their beliefs about mathematics and mathematics learning. Then three technical secondary school students are interviewed. The questionnaire focuses on topics including feelings about school and school mathematics, effort in mathematics, non-school influences on motivation, self-confidence in mathematics, natural ability in mathematics, goal orientation and effort, study habits in mathematics, mathematics content, assessment practices, students' expectations of teachers and task difficulty. From the questionnaire survey and interview, some important findings can be concluded as follows: students' beliefs have a relationship with learning actions; the students' motivation in mathematics learning is active and the students are confident in mathematics what were taught in school, while few students think that mathematics is interesting; only a few students work hard in mathematics; a large number of students lack of the self-confidence and diligence in mathematics learning; many students think that working hard and understanding are more important than natural ability in mathematics learning; students also tend to feel that memorization is an important part of mathematics even though they feel individuals who do not memorize well can still succeed. Most students think that mathematics just consists of rules and formulas. Among technical secondary school students, synthetic high school students and high school students, there are still some differences. And other differences can be found between boys and girls. On the contrary, there are no significant differences between adults and students. In this thesis, some ways on mathematics teaching are given as follows: the teachers should pay more attention to stimulating the motivation of students and make the classroom teaching more interesting. They should also change their educational ideas and help students cultivate good habits.
