The forming of the concept of function indicated a grand transition of thoughtway in mathematics-the transition from constant mathematics to variable mathematics. With function coming into mathematics, movement enters mathematics. Through the analysis of the development of mathematics, the author points out that mathematics was obviously changed in the 17th century by the fact that function entered mathematics, on the basis of which the auther determines to study the position of function from the development of mathematics and basic mathematics education.The importance of function appears in two aspects: On the one hand, as a mathematics concept, the thought of function has permeated every branch of mathematics and function has become the most essential and kernel concept in mathematics. On the other hand, after function came into mathematics curriculum of basic education ,it changed the appearance of the mathematics curriculum radically. On the study of the development of mathematics and the development of mathematics curriculum of basic education,the author draws a conclution: function promoted the development of matherimatics and resulted in the fusion-whose characteristic was the center of curriculum, equation, gave way to function-of mathematics curriculum of basic education which took place after the concept of function entered.As a main clew which runs through the middle school mathematics curriculum, function is undoubtedly important. Being so abstract a concept, how did it enter the mathematics curriculum of basic education? By the analysis of the mathematics curriculum , the auther draws conclusions: permeating in elementary school, primarily found in junior school and deeply understood in high school,the concept of function entered mathematics curriculum; and some aspects such as the content of function ,the appearance patter of function,the application of function and the introduction of function have changed.The mathematics curriculum is an open subject.The auther compares Chinese mathematics curriculum with American mathematics curriculum and points out some reform directions of function content.
