Since 1970s, as a result of a shift from teacher-centredness to learner-centredness, there has been greater attention to the. learning and the learners both from the researchers and the teachers. And learning strategy has become one of the hottest topics in foreign language teaching and research field in recent years. As the new National Curriculum Standards for the English Language Teaching points out, the general goal of English teaching at the fundamental educational stage is to develop the students' overall language competence which is composed of students' general development of their language skills, language knowledge, positive affect & attitude, learning strategies, and cultural awareness. Now it is generally recognized that learning strategies are essential to the development of learning efficiency and learner autonomy. Therefore, it becomes an urgent task for the teachers to focus more on instructing and training the students in learning strategies.Based on vocabulary learning theories and some previous relevant research findings, the author of this thesis conducts an experimental study on vocabulary strategy training in an attempt to investigate into the effect of such training on Grade 5 and Grade 6 students in the primary school. The instruments employed in this research study include questionnaires, interviews and school test papers.After an investigation of 120 Grade 6 students in Nanjing 21st Century Bilingual School, 94 of them were chosen as the subjects and divided into two groups: an experimental group(N1=30) and a controlled group(N2=33, N3=31).
