Schoolmasters are organizers and fulfillers of school management, and are leaders of school reforms and development. Whether schoolmasters are able to properly hold their own roles attaches much essentiality to the development and advancement of schools. With the continuously deepening of educational reforms and the comprehensive introduction of quality-oriented education, schoolmasters have been paid more and more attention from people from every stratum. For a long time, schoolmasters in our country have mainly been playing the roles as administers with little self-determination, independence and freedom. As a result, creative capability, positivity and enthusiasm have been restricted. The reasons can be outlined as the centralized administrative system of education and the planned economy. Under this administrative and economic system, schools were attachments to administrative departments of education; schools were negatively led by administrations. However, with the political and economic development of the nation and the gradually deepened educational systematic reforms, especially the current foundational course reforms, the role of schoolmasters is changing as well. New themes and motives have been endowed to schoolmasters in the new century.Changes in social environment and aims and process of education have put forward new requirements to school development, course management and teacherdevelopment. The role of schoolmasters are required to make historical upgrades—schoolmasters should take the roles as follows: designers of school development, creators of high-quality educational resources, promoters of teachers progress and students grow-up, managers of school courses, leaders of teaching, constructors of pleasant school environment, and researchers of acceleration of school advancement. The new roles must be reflected from three aspects: support, service and leadership. The author of this essay has long been working in the front-line of school education. After long-term observations and interviewing four schoolmasters as case studies, the author finds that schoolmasters'old roles as administrators of have not been removed. This phenomenon...
