The purpose of national defense education is for a country to call itspeople to support and take their due responsibilities in national defense."Law of the People's Republic of China on National Defense Education"says that: the school national defense education is the foundation fornational defense education of the whole nation. It is also a very importantpart in the quality-oriented education. In this new phase of the newcentury it is a very critical issue for us to further raise our awareness ofschool national defense education, to improve our teaching method,content and the efficiency as well. We should cultivate students withpractical and versatile abilities who are capable, knowledgeable, highlyqualified with solid academic foundation and enterprising spirit to pushforward a nationwide national defense education. Nevertheless for avariety of reasons there're many problems and differences in differentinstitutions of higher learning in the national defense education objectives,contents, systems and efficiency assessment which calls for attention andresearch both theoretically and practically from the educationadministrators, university officials as well as teachers in the field ofnational defense education.The research method is a status quo analysis of university nationaldefense education both from home and abroad, integrated with somebasic national defense education teaching principles, some relevant statelaws and regulations, and the special characteristics of national defenseeducation. One purpose of this research is to probe into the coursesystematic construction issue and put forward a national defenseeducation course system that is suitable with Chinese characteristics.Another purpose is to offer valuable reference data to better carry forward"Law of the People's Republic of China on National Defense" and "Lawof the People's Republic of China on National Defense Education" and toincrease the efficiency of the national defense education among college students.This paper is composed of three parts. The first part introduces howthis topic came out, research status, research purpose, theoretical basis,research method and some new viewpoints. The second part introducesthe course system status quo analysis of university national defenseeducation both from home and abroad, mainly about some features andthe present situation in China and some developed countries. The thirdpart shows a revelation of the university national defense educationsystem and summarizes the five principles of patriotism, two objectives,two combinations, persistence and diversifications. The author sharessome thoughts on China's university national defense education trainingsystem and course system by putting forward some course system models.They are: theory model, skills model and curriculum design model. Healso gives some suggestions to ensure the practice of the course system.They are legalized national defense education; scientific curriculumdesign; professional teaching staff and systematic funding of nationaldefense education.
