Purpose: To survey prevalence and index of the subhealth, and investigate the influence ofphysical activity on the subhealth in college students. Methods: This study includes total 1,100 subjects (585 males, 417 females) who were randomlychosen from the freshmen of 2005 of Nanjing University of Information and Science andTechnology. A questionnaire was conducted to investigate demographic data, subhealth, physicalactivity and daily lives in all subjects. The index of subhealth was estimated using YamazakiIndex.Results:1. There was a higher prevalence of subhealth in the college students. Of the subjects, 62.7% showed at least one symptom of subhealth, 25.8% showed 3 or more symptoms.2. There was a significant gender difference in the prevalence of the subhealth. When compared to male college students, the females were likely to demonstrate a significantly higher index of the subhealth (14.9±3.0 vs 13.9±2.8, P<0.01), and had more symptoms of subhealth. However, the two gender groups showed a similar order of the top ten symptoms of subhealth.3. Physical activity was associated closely with prevalence of the subhealth. The subjects who reported "like to participate in physical activities", "exercise 3 times or more one week", and "exercise 90 minutes or more one week " showed significantly lower prevalence and lower index of the subhealth.4. The results of logistic regression analysis demonstrated that "participating in physical activity", "frequency and time of exercise", "paying attention to health information", and "having regular diet" were independently associated with subhealth in male subjects; "participating in physical activity", "frequency of exercise", "paying attention to health information", and "having regular diet" were independently associated with subhealth in female subjects. Conclusion: Subhealth is a common health problem in college students, and is associated with gender, physical activity and lifestyles. To improve health, more exercise and healthy lifestyle are needed for college students.
